Since the beginning of the health crisis in Europe, in March 2020, we have been supplying masks & gloves in the shortest possible time, via our secure direct manufacturer supply channels and access to European stocks.
SSG is the grouping of 3 French companies (FB, SC & PE) present in France (Paris & Tourcoing), Germany (Munich), Poland (Krakow), Thailand (Bangkok) and China (Shanghai). Since 1999, SSG has been searching, monitoring and controlling subcontractors in Europe and Asia.
Our clients, major European accounts, asked us (in March 2020) to supply them, in emergency and in large quantities, directly from Asian factories, with masks and then gloves.
Since May 2020, in order to provide them with even greater security, we have been favouring, as far as possible, the emerging French and European mask manufacturing, while continuing to organise large grouped orders of gloves in Asia.
Since July 2020, we have launched a large inventory of the stocks of masks and gloves already present in Europe, which enables us to respond as quickly as possible to any major demand.
The two relevant legal pillars for disposable gloves in Europe are :
| Medical Devices (DM) | Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Directive : | 93/42/EEC New regulation: 2007/47/EC | (EU) 2016/425 |
| Protection : | For the protection of the patient | For the protection of the user of the gloves |
| Basic Standard : | EN 455 | EN 374 |
Medical Devices
The relevant classes for disposable gloves are :
The basic standard for medical gloves is EN 455. It defines, among other things, the tolerance for tightness, the properties
physical properties, dimensions, biocompatibility test methods, labelling requirements and especially requirements concerning the expiry date.
Personal protective equipment
Personal protective equipment is divided into three different categories according to the risk for which it is intended to provide protection:
EN 420:2003 + A1 2009 is the basic standard that defines the general requirements for a glove with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) label. It informs the user about the safety of the glove material and the product characteristics (e.g. length, size, etc.).
In addition to EN 420:2003 + A1 2009, EN ISO 374-1:2016 also applies to protective gloves by defining resistance against chemicals and microorganisms.
Surgical (or medical, or 3-ply) masks
There are 3 types of surgical masks :
| Type I | Type II | Type IIR | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) of an aerosol with an average size of 3µm | 95% | 98% | 98% |
| Maximum differential pressure (Pa/cm²) | 29.4 | 29.9 | 49 |
| Minimum pressure of the splash resistance (kPa) | Not required | Not required | 29 |
Among surgical masks, the IIR type is therefore the one that protects the others the most from the particles you are projecting.
Respiratory Protection Masks FFP (Filtering Facepiece Particles)
There are 3 classes of filtration efficiency for these FFP respiratory protection masks :
| FFP1 | FFP2 | FFP3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum filtration of medium-sized aerosols 0.6 µm | 80% | 94% | 99% |
| Maximum filter penetration % | 20 | 6 | 1 |
| Maximum total inward leakage | 22% | 8% | 2% |
